SMI Wire Sdn. Bhd. was incorporated in 1997. Before this, it was a wholly owned business unit of South Malaysia Industries Berhad, which was listed on the main board of Bursa Malaysia in 1971.

As a manufacturing division of South Malaysia Industries Berhad, the steel wire operations started in 1969 producing low carbon galvanised steel wire, hard drawn steel wire and PVC coated galvanised steel wire.

It has now broadened its manufacturing facilities to include staple wire, heavily galvanised wire and black annealed wires to meet the increasing demand both from the domestic and export markets such as Australia, Pacific Islands, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore,etc...
